Guard/Ranger Expectations:

Guards/Rangers are expected to be more than just the IC police force. They are IC moderators as well. Disputes between characters should be settled through them. Disputes between players during play should be dealt with by them as well. They are the on the spot handlers of such issues. If an issue cannot be worked out on the spot, then it should be brought to an OOC Moderator or Admin.

Certain moderator functions (specifically SILENCE and MOVE and RANDOM ROLL) are given to the Guards/Rangers to assist in these situations. These functions are to be used responsibly and for their intended purposes.

If a player is being abusive, harassing another, excessively using OOC speech in IC rooms, etc. IM warnings should be given BEFORE the silence function is employed. Use a “three strikes” rule of thumb for this. Silencing a player because you don’t like their play style is not acceptable.

Random Roll can be used as a tool to settle an even dispute with the fairness of pure randomness. The two disputing parties pick a number (1-20). Then the moderator uses the /roll command and whoever guessed closer wins. This removes the argument that a moderator is playing favorites or judging unfairly.

The Move function is mostly for style purposes. A Guard/Ranger, once they have arrested someone and have them fully in custody, can use the move command to put them in the guardhouse. That’s just a little indulgence for my own entertainment, feel free to enjoy it. It can also be used as an alternative to the Kick command to remove an uncooperative player from an IC room. While nothing stops them from moving back into the room (which I’m working on anyway), nothing stops a kicked player from logging back in either.

The Guards/Rangers are also expected to be active and interactive in the IC facet of the game. If you are logged in and there are people RPing in a room under your jurisdiction, go in. Pass through the room. Even if you don’t fully engage in the RP in progress, make an appearance; post once or twice about passing through, looking around, saying hello to someone IC if appropriate. Give a little time afterwards to see if anyone engages you. Then move on if nothing keeps your there, but at least it creates a feeling of presence. Just sitting in the OOC does not constitute being accessible to the players. It’s the Guards/Rangers’ responsibility to engage the game.

Arrest Procedures:

- Identify yourself as a Guard/Ranger.

- Identify the infraction and demand it stop immediately.

- RP the apprehension of the character. This may include the physical restraint, handcuffing, fighting/disabling, resisting arrest*, running away, etc.

- Confirm in IM that the character is fully in custody.

- Take the character to the guard house/ranger station (optionally using the move command) and place the character in a cell.

- File a report with your captain**.

Quite obviously, different situations will require deviations from this procedure. Violent crimes, for example, will warrant swifter and more forceful action. The identification of oneself as a guard is of major IC importance as it removes the “self defense” claim when the character attacks the guard. In any situation, use your best judgment and always remember that the PRIMARY purpose of this game is to have fun and that no one’s fun is more important than anyone else’s.

*see special rules below.

**Email a brief summary of the arrest to your captain who will pass it up to the judge (currently Jaxon) for trials and punishments etc.

Aww man, you mean the job comes with RESPONSIBILITY? :-p
Actually, I think the Captains should create a list of who serves under them, and who is/has not been active.

So . . . um . . . just for hypothetical purposes . . . what exactly are the "Special Rules" for resisting arrest? You know, just for academic debate. *smiles innocently*

Trega in response to your question; You are a special case you see, just arresting you and throwing away the key would not suffice. And I believe that at least Ranger would agree that special conditions are warranted for special people such as yourself. That being said I am herby throwing out the Idea that in the case of resistance you will be bound and gagged and free of charge delivered onto the ship of One Pirate whom we shall keep from being named and his drowess partner. There you shall serve as their wench

Thanks :-D

The special rules only apply to Renton and Trega. So you see if you don't know them that means you are negligent in your duties!!!
